installed an aluminium pergola (12th May 25 at 6:52am UTC)Quote Reply
Hey everyone, I recently installed an aluminium pergola in my backyard and I absolutely love how sleek it looks, especially with the clean lines and matte finish. But I’m already wondering—what’s the best way to keep it in good shape over time? I live near the coast, so I’m worried about salt in the air and general wear. Do I need to do anything special to maintain the frame or is it pretty hands-off?

good question—especially with coastal air, it’s smart to think ahead. Aluminium is definitely one of the more low-maintenance materials, but it still needs some love to last and keep looking good. I live inland and have had my wall mounted gazebo with aluminium frame for almost three years now, and I do a quick clean every few months using just mild soap and warm water. Never use anything abrasive—it’ll scratch that protective coating and then you're in for corrosion down the line.

Also, check the joints and bolts once or twice a year, especially after a storm. I had one loosen slightly after some serious wind last autumn. It took 10 minutes to fix but could’ve become a bigger issue. If you're considering accessories like side panels or drop-down blinds, make sure they don’t trap moisture at the corners. I got mine from here, they’ve got some nice, sturdy options: wall mounted gazebo – they’ve also got good info on maintaining wall mounted gazebo setups, which helped me choose the right fittings.

If you're near the sea, maybe wipe it down more often to avoid salt buildup—once a month maybe, depending on exposure.

I totally agree with both of you. I’m not near the sea, but even with regular rain and pollen in the spring, I’ve found it helps to give it a light hose-down now and then. I also avoid hanging heavy stuff from it, just in case. Maintenance may be minimal, but a little effort really does go a long way!

Aluminum pergolas are quite easy to maintain. In coastal areas, you just need to occasionally flush them with clean water to wash away the salt, and gently wipe them with mild soap if they get dirty. No special care is needed, just check the screws and joints periodically. You can check the addresses of maintenance or repair shops on a mapquest driving directions.
